Duties

Duties of the Senior Minister

Provide overall visionary spiritual and administrative leadership and management to the Church, including designing new plans and programs.

• Conduct the majority (approximately 80%) of worship services including preaching, as well as conduct pastoral calling, counseling, weddings, baptisms, and funerals as appropriate.
• Direct, develop, and evaluate members of the Church's Program Staff and maintain overall responsibility for all other staff.
• Oversee and improve all activities of the Church especially worship, religious education, stewardship, benevolence and new member recruitment and assimilation.
• Meet with and advise the Moderator, Officers, Council, Boards, and Committees of the Church.
• Represent the Church to appropriate outside organizations, such as NACCC.
• Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of Congregational Home.
• Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Duties of the Minister for Pastoral Care

Plan, supervise, and evaluate the church's overall program of adult education, spiritual formation, pastoral care, and lay ministries.

• Develop and maintain Pastoral Care system to perform general pastoral calling in cooperation with Ministerial Staff.
• Develop and coordinate Lay ministry programs to employ qualified laity in caring ministries (including developing programs to produce 'qualified lay ministers').
• Develop and coordinate "small group ministry" to focus on spiritual formation for the congregation. The goal should be allowing these groups to grow in accord with perceived needs.
• Develop and coordinate adult education ministry with an emphasis upon developing and promoting our own resource persons.
• Advise staff, Deacons, Board of Congregational Care, and Church Council regarding Pastoral Care Ministries.

• Assist in worship services.
• Preach at the direction of senior minister.
• Perform counseling, weddings, baptisms, funerals, and memorial services.

Duties of the Financial Administrator

The Financial Administrator is responsible to, and works under the direction, the Personnel Committee and the Senior Minister, The duties of this position include but are not limited to:

• Supervising and monitor the raising, handling, and expenditure of all church monies
• Serving as resource person regarding the legal and business matters of the church
• Serving as an advisor to:

Board of Trustees
Board of Stewardship
Nominating Committee
Budget and Finance Committee
Memorials and Special Gifts Committee
Personnel Committee (as requested)
Membership at Council Meetings

• Performing other duties as shall be assigned by the Church Council or the Senior Minister

The Office Manager is responsible to, and works under the direction, the Personnel Committee and the Senior Minister, The duties of this position include but are not limited to:

• Managing the operation of the church office
• Serving as resource person regarding the legal and business matters of the church
• Coordinating building use and meeting set-ups
• Making editorial decisions for content and layout of Congregationalist
• Performing other duties as shall be assigned by the Church Council or the Senior Minister

Staff Biographies

The Rev. William S. Trump, Jr.

Senior Minister

Rev. William S Trump, Jr. is our Settled Minister and is involved in the leadership of all areas in the church’s life. Bill is a native Milwaukeean and is a life-long Congregationalist having grown up at North Shore Congregational Church in Fox Point, Wisconsin. A graduate of Nicolet high school, Bill attended the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and earned his degree in Psychology in 1977. After graduation from UW - Eau Claire, Bill attended Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York where he received his Master of Divinity degree in 1983. He also completed his studies with the Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies, a division of the Congregational Christian Churches that supports seminary students. In 1983, Bill was called to be the minister of a church in the tiny farm community of Vermontville, Michigan. Then in 1987, he was called to serve a church in Burlington, Iowa where he remained until 1995. That year Trump was called to be the Senior Minister at the Congregational Church of the Chimes in Sherman Oaks, California. He spent the next seventeen years serving that church in the heart of the Los Angeles San Fernando Valley. Following an extensive search process the First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa called Bill to serve our congregation. Rev. Trump has served on the Board of Directors of the Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies and is presently serving on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches [NACCC]. In 1992, Bill delivered the Congregational Lecture at the Annual Meeting of the NACCC. During his ministry, Bill has served in many different community and church organizations including the Retired Senior Volunteer program, food pantry boards, and other local and state clergy associations. He is the father of two adult children who reside in California. He and his wife, Cathy, make their home in the Milwaukee area.

The Rev. Barry W. Szymanski, J.D.

Minister of Pastoral Care

Rev. Barry W. Szymanski, J.D. is the Minister of pastoral care, but serves in all roles as a pastor with sacraments, preaching, workshops, retreats, counseling and visiting our church members. Pastor Barry graduated with honors from seminary in 2006 with an emphasis in scriptural studies. He is a second career minister having graduated in 1973 from Marquette University Law School. He is a member of the Congregational Society of Classical Retreat Guides, a member of the Wisconsin Congregational Association, and a member of the International Congregational Fellowship. He is now serving the NACCC on the Board of Directors and is the Chair of the NACCC Personnel and Administration Committee; he is also serving on the NACCC Search Committee for the Executive Director. He has served on the NACCC’s Division for Ministry, and is a past president of the Wisconsin Ministers Association. Pastor Barry completed the Congregational History and Polity Seminar at the Center of Congregational Leadership, and also the British Congregational Tour in England. He presented ‘Organizational Change and Employee/Volunteer Discipline, Correction and Termination in a Church’ setting both at the 2011 NACCC Annual Meeting & Conference in Scottsdale, and later at the Center for Congregational Leadership at Olivet College. Pastor Barry authors monthly articles for The Columns, the monthly publication of First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa. In 2012, in Minneapolis, he preached and facilitated the Minister’s Classical Retreat. Pastor Barry is also a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Wisconsin State Bar, and a member of the Wisconsin Association of Mediators. He is the contributing photographer, and has also authored articles, for The Congregationalist magazine. He was also the sole photographer for a published image book: A Congregationalist's Journey Photographs of Sacred and Secular England.

Barry and his wife, Sue, are the parents of one daughter, Sarah. Sarah, and her husband, Dave, have blessed Barry and Sue with two grandchildren, Eddie and Opal.

During his seminary internship at Children's Hospital he began to integrate his seminary studies with ministry and pastoral care. He graduated from Clinical Pastoral Education, having served at Elmbrook Hospital, and also having had additional chaplaincy training at Children's Hospital.

As a minister, he has been a guest preacher at various Congregational churches, and has led retreats and Bible studies on a variety of topics.

His primary ongoing passion, since grade school, has been photography. Barry finds that photography is another way of looking at people and places and realizing God's glory. Up until a few years ago, he was also active in martial arts, and taught many self-defense classes, including at United Airlines in Chicago.

He believes that the task of today's pastor is to make the faith dynamic - to bring it to life and he feels that he can add what he has learned in his legal profession, which is that a preacher is to win a verdict for God.
