Worship in the Manner of the 19th Century Congregationalists
(Please pass the red pew pads now. If you are a guest this Sunday, we would love
to greet you following the service or at coffee fellowship in the Social Hall.)
THE PRELUDE How Can I Keep From Singing Lowrey/Hollinger
Jill Bruss, Alto
INVOCATION Rev. Barry Szymanski, J.D.
Often, and appropriately, followed, or rather concluded, by the chanting of the Lord’s Prayer by the choir, or by that whole congregation that is so doubly happy as to be able to chant and to have no choir.
Henry Martyn Dexter
The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal, no. 412
*SINGING Our God, Our Help in Ages Past Hymnal, no. 1
READING OF THE SCRIPTURES
Where, as is often thought well, this reading includes (a) a portion from the Old Testament, and (b) also from the New, the Gloria Patri may with good effect be chanted (unannounced) between these portions.
Henry Martyn Dexter
The Old Testament Lesson 1 Samuel 1:4-20 Rev. Jan Kwiatkowski M.S., M.F.T. Bible, page 242 Children’s Bible, page 367
*The Gloria Patri
Children go to classes following the singing – in the 19th century they would have remained throughout the service.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
The New Testament Lesson Mark 13:1-8 Bible, page 925 Children’s Bible, page 1447

Today’s order of service is drawn from A Hand-Book of Congregationalism (1880) by the Reverend Henry Martyn Dexter, D.D., one of the leading lights of the Congregational Way in the nineteenth century. The manner in which we have worshipped today would have been typical for Congregationalists at the time our Church was gathered in 1842.
Today's Chancel flowers are given by the Hantzsch family in memory of Eugene DuWell
and in honor of Doris DuWell on the occasion of their 54th wedding anniversary.
We miss you; we love you.
