CHIMES AND TOWER BELLS

THE CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 99) Rev. Samuel R. Schaal

Liturgist: People tremble and a tremor runs through the whole earth when confronted
with the great and majestic power of God.
People: We praise God’s great and holy name.
Liturgist: God’s love for the world is revealed in acts of justice and righteousness.
People: We bow down before God’s holy presence.
Liturgist: God heard and answered the cries of Moses and Aaron and Samuel, who experienced God’s righteousness as both judgment and grace.
People: God’s word of judgment and grace comes to us still, not in a pillar of cloud, but through the person of Jesus Christ.
Liturgist: We praise God for the Word made flesh present among us, full of grace and truth.
People: We gather to offer worship and praise. Alleluia!

*HYMN 37 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

*THE PRAYER OF THE DAY and THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

God of majesty and awe, your people of old experienced your creative power, your glory and holiness as clouds and fire guiding them to freedom. They believed that no one could see your face and live. How blessed are we, for you have revealed your face to us in Jesus - the human face of your love. Your gift of the Holy Spirit equips us for our journey through life and beyond, breathing new and everlasting life into our very beings. As your people of the first covenant believed your presence made them a chosen people, we praise and adore you, O God, for continuing your presence and sharing your life with us in and through Jesus. May this time of worship and the service of our lives reveal our thanksgiving and our wonder that you should so care for us. This we pray in Jesus’ name, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*THE GLORIA PATRI (Hymn 558)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen, Amen.

THE INVITATION TO SUNDAY SCHOOL

THE PSALMODY Psalm 99 sung to Leoni

God reigns, enthroned on high; Unto the priests of old
Let all the earth proclaim Who called upon God’s name,
With trembling lips the awesome might The Law was spoken from the clouds,
Of God’s great name! And wrought in flame!
A holy Lord, whose rule To God’s commands give heed;
Is marked with equity; In faith endure always;
Whose righteousness to us is bound Let Zion’s walls forever ring
All time to be. With songs of praise!
