Liturgist:          We gather today from the busyness of life to receive strength.

People:           We come as people of God to excel in God’s work through breaking

                        the bread and drinking the cup.

Liturgist:          We join hearts and minds with Christ-followers throughout the world who

                        today join us in celebrating our communion in the Lord.

People:           Through this sacrament we will receive power to be faithful in love, to

                        serve the people of the world.

ALL:               Together we worship God and bring God’s love and joy to our world.

                        Alleluia!

*INVOCATION AND LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

God of love and mercy, we come before you with grateful hearts for sustaining us in the critical times of our life. Terrorism, war, hatred, and lack of trust surround us,

but through simple signs of bread broken and cup poured out we learn to love and trust others. God help us that we may not be discouraged in our task of proclaiming your love and word of life to our weary world. Above all, give us strength to live our faith, even in difficult times. Send your Holy Spirit that we may be faithful and steadfast in loving others as you are steadfast and faithful in loving us. We come to the table your Son set for us and we remember your love that he showed us, even as he taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

THE CHURCH OFFERS THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

{The service is taken from The Wee Worship Book of the ecumenical Iona Community, Scotland}

INVITATION TO TABLE AND CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION  [unison]

God of steadfast compassion, we confess that we don’t always struggle very hard with those daily temptations that surround us. We confess that we often give in to the temptation to judge others, to speak harshly, to allow our anger free rein, to take more than our share, to be lazy, to be thoughtless. Encourage us in the discipline of expecting better of ourselves in these things and the strength to stand firmly against large temptations we face. Bless us with the faith to turn to you in honest repentance when we fail. Amen.

THE STORY

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

            {after the minister concludes “…on earth and in heaven:” we all say:}

            ALL: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are

            full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in

            name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

            Minister: Lord God, as we come to share the richness of your table, we cannot forget

            the rawness of the earth. We cannot take bread and forget those who are hungry.

            Your world is one world and we are stewards of its nourishment.

            ALL: Lord, put our prosperity at the service of the poor.

Minister: We cannot take wine and forget those who are thirsty. The ground and the rootless, the earth and its weary people cry out for justice.

ALL: Lord, put our fullness at the service of the empty.

Minister: We cannot hear your words of peace and forget the world at war or, if not

at war, then preparing for it.

ALL: Show us quickly, Lord, how to turn weapons into welcome signs and the lust for power into a desire for peace.

Minister: We cannot celebrate the feast of your family and forget our divisions. We are one in spirit, but not in fact. History and hurt still dismember us.

ALL: Lord, heal your church in every brokenness.

The Prayer of Consecration

The Communion

The Prayer following Communion [unison]

Lord God, you put the life of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, into our hands; now we put our lives into yours. Take us, renew and remake us. What we have been is past; what we shall be, through you, still awaits us. Lead us on. Take us with you and let us follow you with new minds and new hearts. Amen.

Sing Praise To God

Johann J. Shutz 1640-1690

Sing praise to God who reigns above,

The God of all creation,

The God of power, the God of love,

The God of our salvation.

With healing balm my soul He fills

And every faithless murmur stills.

To God all praise and glory.

What God's almighty power hath made

His gracious mercy keepeth.

By morning glow or evening shade

His watchful eye never sleepeth.

Within the kingdom of His might,

Lo, all is just and all is right.

To God all praise and glory.

The Lord is never far away,

But, through all grief distressing,

An ever present help and stay,

Our peace and joy and blessing.

As with a mother's tender hand

He leads his own, His chosen band.

To God all praise and glory.

Thus all my toilsome way along

I shall sing aloud Thy praises,

That men may hear the grateful song

My unwearied voice now raises.

Be joyful in the Lord, O my heart;

Both soul and body bear your part.

To God all praise and glory. Amen.
