Minister:    God asks of us, Is not this the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice;

People:     to share your bread with the hungry;

Minister:    to bring the homeless poor into your house;

People:     when you see the naked, to clothe them?

Minister:    Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,

People:     and your healing shall spring up quickly.

Minister:    Jesus calls us to take up our cross and follow. Sisters and brothers, come!

All:            We will take up the cross and follow!

*THE PRAYER OF INVOCATION AND LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

God of all times and places, in Jesus Christ, lifted up on the cross, you opened for us
 the path to eternal life. Grant that we, being born again of water and the Spirit, may
 joyfully serve you in newness of life and faithfully walk in your holy ways; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 and who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

ANTHEM                                            O Brother Man                                                 Wetzler

                                            John Greenleaf Whittier 1807-1892

O brother man, fold to thy heart thy brother!

Where pity dwells, the peace of God is there;

To worship rightly is to love each other,

Each smile a hymn, each kindly deed a prayer.

Then follow with reverent steps the great example

Of him whose holy work was doing good;

So shall the wide earth seem our Father's temple,

Each loving life a psalm of gratitude.

Then shall all shackles fall; the stormy clangor

Of wild war music over the earth shall cease;

Love shall tread out the baleful fire of anger,

And in its ashes plant the tree of peace.

*THE RESPONSE                     We Give Thee But Thine Own                                   Hymn 535

                                We give thee but thine own, Whate’er the gift may be;

All that we have is thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from thee. Amen
