People:     and taller than a steeple.

Liturgist:    The church is made of “living stones” and loving hearts.

People:     Together we make the church, the Body of Christ.

All:            For we are God’s own people, so that we may declare God’s wonderful deeds of love and of light.

Liturgist:    Come, then, and bless the Lord!

*THE PRAYER OF INVOCATION AND LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

Lord God, we thank you for calling us into the company of those who trust in Christ and seek to obey his will. You have made us strangers no longer but pilgrims together on the way to your kingdom. Guide us closer to you and to one another in the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace, and strengthen us together in mission and service to your world. As you have made us in your image, help us to use the many gifts you have given us so that we might always bring our heads to worship you, as well as our hearts, that your glory may be known to all. We pray in the name of him who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

HYMN OF RESPONSE 266  One Holy Church of God Appears

THE CALL TO PRAYER and SILENT MEDITATION

THE PRAYER OF MINISTER AND PEOPLE

Minister:    Sovereign God, we give you thanks for calling us your children

                  and for entrusting us with the care of your creation.

People:     Help us to feel the many textures of your global tapestry. Unstop our ears, that we may hear your Word spoken in many languages. Breathe into us the sweet aromas of life, that we may taste the fruits of your reign.

Minister:    Even now, Lord, even in Asia, so vast, so deeply rooted in tradition; where your church is small, but where religion is great,

People:     Lord, teach us respect. Help us learn from those who express faith in you in different ways. Deepen our understanding of customs that are unfamiliar. Help us discover new ways to witness in this ancient land.

Minister:    Even now, Lord, even in the Middle East, the cradle of the church, the land many faiths call holy, and now the place where the pain of the cross is so vivid,

                  where the dry earth is watered by the tears of suffering,

People:     free your people from their warring madness. Teach us mutual respect, that the captives might be freed and the frightened might be comforted.

Minister:    Even now, Lord, even in Latin America, where your church stands faithfully with the weak and the poor, where martyrs are made and drugs dictate, where we are paying for the sins of our past,

People:     bring peace to our neighbors, O Lord. Tear down the barriers that divide

                  and build bridges that bring people together for the common good.

Minister:    Even now, Lord, even in Africa, where your church grows rapidly, where faith is exuberant, but where there is famine and oppression,

People:     break the cycle of suffering among our sisters and brothers and help us to respond to their needs in ways that bring your message of hope to those who languish in despair.

Minister:    Even now, Lord, even in North America, where so much affluence causes so much indifference—North America, the land with so much to give yet a land held prisoner by its possessions—

People:     help us to assume the role of a servant, as Jesus did. Open our eyes to all parts of your creation even now, Lord, even if what we see frightens us.

And help us to trust you to guide us as we act faithfully.

{The Minister continues and concludes the prayer.}

Go now in peace. Never be afraid. God will go with you each hour of every day.

Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true. Know He will guide you in all you do.

Go now in love, and show you believe. Reach out to others so all the world can see.

Near to the Heart of God

Cleland B. McAfee

There is a place of quiet rest,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where sin cannot molest,

Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where we our Savior meet,

Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,

Sent from the heart of God,

Hold us who wait before Thee

Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where all is joy and peace,

Near to the heart of God.

King Of Glory, King Of Peace

George Herbert

King of glory, King of peace,

I will love thee; and that love may never cease,

I will move thee.

Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me;

thou dids't note my working breast, thou hast spared me.

Wherefore with my utmost art,

I will sing thee; and the cream of all my heart,

I will bring thee.

Though my sins against me cried, thou dids't clear me;

and alone when they replied, thou dids't hear me.

Seven whole days, not one in seven,

I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven,

I can raise thee.

Small it is in this poor sort to enroll thee;

e'en eternity's too short to extol thee.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

William Williams

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,

Pilgrim through this barren land;

I am weak, but Thou art mighty;

Hold me with Thy powerful hand;

Bread of heaven

Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing stream doth flow;

Let the fire and cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey through;

Strong Deliverer

Be Thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid my anxious fears subside;

Bear me through the swelling current,

Land me safe on Canaan's side;

Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee.
