CALL TO WORSHIP

Liturgist:    When our hearts are dry, empty of love,

People:     Blow new life into us, Holy Spirit.

Liturgist:    When our bones are dry, torn by violence,

People:     Blow new life into us, Holy Spirit.

Liturgist:    When our souls are dry, shriveled into bitterness,

People:     Blow new life into us, Holy Spirit.

All:            Raise us up into hope and inspire us to receive your new dream for creation.

*HYMN 243

Holy Spirit, Truth Divine

*CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION AND LORDÕS PRAYER (unison)

Almighty God, your Son came into the world to free us all from sin and death. Breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit, that we may be raised to new life in Christ, and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, and who taught us to sayÉ

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

THE CALL TO PRAYER and SILENT MEDITATION

THE PRAYER OF MINISTER AND PEOPLE

Minister:    The hand of God is upon you.

People:     It leads us into the midst of the valley, a valley filled with old bones.

Minister:    God leads you among their great, silent piles; all the bones are brittle and dry.

People:     And now we hear a voice call from heaven:

Minister:    "Speak to these bones," says the Lord God, our Maker, "and tell them to hear as

                  you utter my word."

People:     So we shall speak, but what shall we say?

Minister:    "Say to these bones, 'I am the Lord who shall give to you breath. Then you will

                  know the God of the living.' "

People:     God's word is spoken. And now, hear the rattle, the clacking and clatter.

                  Bones knit to bones; muscles appear and flesh falls upon them. But no

                  breath is heard; no sigh falls among them.

Minister:    "Now, say to the Spirit, 'I am the Lord. Bring winds from the West, the North

                  and the East; from the South send my breath to the hearts of these dead.' "

People:     God's word is spoken. And now, see the tempest; and now, hear the

                  whisper. The bodies arise, with spirits in all.

Minister:    "These bones were dead, but now they shall live."

People:     Never again shall we say in our pain, "Our bones are all dry; all hope has

                  fled. Let us lie down in the valley of graves."

ALL:         Our God will command, "Great stone, roll away!" Our God will declare,

                  "Come out from your shroud!" And we shall come out and live once again.

{the Minister continues the prayer}

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Charles Wesley, 1707 - 88

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down;

Fix in us thy humble dwelling;

All thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

Come, Almighty to deliver,

Let us all Thy life receive;

Suddenly return and never,

Never more Thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,

Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,

Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation;

Pure and spotless let us be.

Let us see Thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in Thee;

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before Thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Spirit of God

George Croly

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart,

Wean it from earth; Through all its pulses move.

Spirit of God, descend.

Stoop to my weakness mighty as Thou art,

And make me love Thee as I ought to love.

Spirit of God descend.
