Liturgist:    Sometimes we are in darkness:

People:     In despair, in hopelessness, in anger, in fear,

Liturgist:    Sometimes we are in darkness:

People:     In confusion, in addiction, in alienation, in loneliness.

All:            Here we are offered light. Here we are invited to walk in the light;

                  with light hearts, light steps, light burdens. Let us choose the light.

Our Lord God, come as holy light to enlighten our minds. Come as holy truth to teach us your way.

 Come as holy power to send us into your service. Hear as we pray as Jesus taught usÉ

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

THE CALL TO PRAYER and SILENT MEDITATION

THE PRAYER OF PEOPLE AND MINISTER

Minister:    As Israel sought leaders for the people of God, we seek leaders for the church of

                  Jesus Christ. The fields are white unto harvest. May the Lord guide us in our

                  search.

People:     But we are not persons of great learning.

Minister:    The Lord does not see as people see. They look on the outward appearance,

                  but God looks on the heart.

People:     But we are not persons of great wealth.

Minister:    The Lord does not see as people see. They look on the outward appearance,

                  but God looks on the heart.

People:     But we are not persons of great power.

Minister:    The Lord does not see as people see. They look on the outward appearance,

                  but God looks on the heart.

People:     Does this mean that the Lord will even consider us?

Minister:    Why not? A manger cradled the Savior of the world.

ALL:         God does not see as we see. We look on the outward appearance, but God

                  looks on the heart.

{the Minister continues the prayer}

Prayer For Blessing

Adapted form the Book of Common Prayer, D.S.

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings, with thy most gracious favor.

Direct us, O Lord, and further us with thy continual help;

That in all our works begun,

That in all our works continued,

and ended in thee,

We may glorify thy name,

and receive everlasting life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Maker In Whom We Live

Charles Wesley, 1747

Maker, in whom we love, in whom we are and move,

the glory, power, and praise receive for your creating love.

Let all the angel throng give thanks to God on high,

while earth repeats the song and echoes to the sky.

Spirit of Holiness, let all your saints adore,

adore your energy, and bless your heart-renewing power.

Not angel tongues can tell your love's ecstatic height,

the glorious joy unspeakable, the beatific sight.

Eternal, Triune god, let all the hosts above,

let all on earth below record and dwell upon your love.

When heaven and earth are fled before your glorious face,

sing all the saints your love has made your everlasting praise. Amen.

Open My Eyes

Lancelot Andrewes, 1555-1626

Open my eyes and I shall see;

incline my heart and I shall desire;

order my steps and I shall walk

in the ways of your commandments.

O God, be my only Lord,

and beside you let there be none else,

no other, none else with you.

Teach me to worship you and serve you

in all my undertakings with truth of spirit,

with honor of body,

with blessing of mouth

both in public and private.

Open my eyes and I shall see;

incline my heart and I shall desire;

order my steps and I shall walk

in the ways of your commandments. Amen.

My Song Is Love Unknown

Samuel Crossman 1624-1683

My song is love unknown,

My SaviorÕs love to me;

Love to the loveless shown,

That they might lovely be.

O who am I, that for my sake

My Lord should take, frail flesh and die?

He came from His blest throne

Salvation to bestow;

But men made strange, and none

The longed for Christ would know:

But O! My Friend, my Friend indeed,

Who at my need His life did spend.

Sometimes they strew His way,

And His sweet praises sing;

Resounding all the day

Hosannas to their King:

Then ÒCrucify!Ó is all their breath,

And for His death they thirst and cry.

Why, what hath my Lord done?

What makes this rage and spite?

He made the lame to run,

He gave the blind their sight,

Sweet injuries! Yet they at these

Themselves displease, and Õgainst Him rise.

Here might I stay and sing,

No story so divine;

Never was love, dear King!

Never was grief like Thine.

This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise

I all my days could gladly spend.
