O Lord God, you led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. So guide us, that, following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, and who taught us to pray, sayingÉ

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

I. Franz, 1719-1790

Holy God we praise thy name!

Lord of all we bow before thee;

All on earth thy scepter claim,

All in heaven above adore thee;

Infinite thy vast domain,

Everlasting is thy reign.

Hark! the loud celestial hymn

Angel choirs above are raising;

Cherubim and Seraphim

In unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heavens with sweet accord:

Holy, holy, holy Lord!

Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit,

three we name thee,

While in essence only one,

Undivided God we claim thee,

And adoring bend the knee,

While we own the mystery.

Lenten Evensong Service

First Congregational Church celebrates

Lenten Choral Evensong February 20 at 4:00 p.m.

Evensong is simply another word for a service of evening prayer. Evensong is an ancient service derived from the Jewish custom of morning and evening prayer and is continued as part of daily worship in a number of Christian traditions. It is, traditionally, a very meditative service that uses Psalms, hymns, anthems, and readings from Scripture to thank God for the day that is past and to prepare for the evening rest.

The evensong service at First Church will contain the traditional elements of Psalms (though we include one sung as a hymn by the congregation) and readings, along with anthems and responses sung by the choir. It is among the loveliest Christian worship services and a very appropriate way to observe Lent and prepare to celebrate the LordÕs Resurrection.
