                                                        THE GATHERING

THE PRELUDE                               O Worship the King                                         arr. Osman

WELCOME AND PRAYER OF INVOCATION                                  Rev. Samuel Schaal

THE CALL TO WORSHIP       Come, and Let Us Sweetly Join

                                                       (chanted by the choir)

*HYMN                                               Marching to Zion

               (Children are dismissed to Sunday School during the singing of the hymn.)

1.              Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, join in a song with sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus surround the throne.

Refrain: WeÕre marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; weÕre marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God.

2.              Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God; but children of the heavenly King, but children of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad, may speak their joys abroad. Refrain.

3.              The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets before we reach the heavenly fields, before we reach the heavenly fields, or walk the golden streets, or walk the golden streets. Refrain.

4.              Then let our songs abound, and every tear be dry; weÕre marching through EmmanuelÕs ground, weÕre marching through EmmanuelÕs ground, to fairer worlds on high, to fairer worlds on high. Refrain.

                    THE READING AND EXPOUNDING OF THE SCRIPTURES

THE PRAYER OF APPROACH

THE FIRST LESSON                        Isaiah 65:17-25

THE PSALM                                           Psalm 12

1.     Help, Lord; for there is no longer any that is godly;

      for the faithful have vanished from among the sons of men.

2.     Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

3.     May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts,

4.     those who say, ÒWith our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is our master?Ó

5.     ÒBecause the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan, I will now arise,Ó says the Lord; ÒI will place him in the safety for which he longs.Ó

6.     The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure, silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.

7.     Do thou, O Lord, protect us, guard us ever from this generation.

8.     On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

THE SECOND LESSON                    Luke 21:5-19                  Rev. Steven A. Peay, Ph.D.

*THE GLORIA PATRI (Hymn 513)

            Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

            As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

            Amen. Amen.

THE ANTHEM   8:45                         The Gift of Love                                                Hopson

 *HYMN                                        I Love thy Kingdom, Lord

1.              I love thy kingdom, Lord, The house of thine abode,

The Church blest Redeemer saved With his own precious blood.

2.              I love thy Church, O God; Her walls before thee stand,

Dear as the apple of thine eye, And graven on thy hand.

3.              For her my tears shall fall, For her my prayers ascend,

To her my cares and toils be given Till toils and cares shall end.

4.              Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways,

Her sweet communion, solemn vows, Her hymns of love and praise.

5.              Sure as thy truth shall last, To Zion shall be given

The brightest glories earth can yield, And brighter bliss of heaven. Amen.

            Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;

            Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*THE GENERAL PRAYER AND LORDÓS PRAYER

[Following the prayer the minister will invite us to pray:]

ÉOur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

*HYMN                                      The ChurchÕs One Foundation

1.              The churchÕs one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;

she is his new creation by water and the Word.

From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;

with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

2.              Elect from every nation, yet one oÕer all the earth;

her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith one birth;

one only name she blesses, partakes one holy food,

and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

3.              Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed,

by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed,

yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, ÒHow long?Ó

And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

4.              Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,

she waits the consummation of peace for evermore;

till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest,

and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

5.              Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,

and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.

O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we

like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

The Gift of Love; Based on I Corinthians 13

Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire,

And have not love; my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess,

But not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, spirit come, our hearts control,

Our spirits long to be made whole.

O come, spirit, come,

Let inward love, Let love guide every deed. By this we worship, we are freed. Amen.

Near to the Heart of God; Cleland B. McAfee

There is a place of quiet rest,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where sin cannot molest,

Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where we our Savior meet,

Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,

Sent from the heart of God,

Hold us who wait before Thee

Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,

Near to the heart of God,

A place where all is joy and peace,

Near to the heart of God.

Simple Gifts; Shaker Hymn

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, 'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained,

To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed, To turn, turn will be our delight,

'Till by turning, turning we come round right.

Praise God with Cymbals; Based on Psalm 149, 150

Sing to the Lord bless his holy name.

Sing to the Lord all the earth.

Praise him with dancing and shout for joy.

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. He adorns the humble with victory. Let the people praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord, bless his holy name.

Sing to the Lord all the earth.

Praise him with trumpet, with timbrel

and dance. Praise him with cymbals, loud clashing cymbals. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! As for us, our days are like grass. We flourish like flowers of the field, For the wind passes over, and they are gone, and are not seen again. But the love of God is everlasting to those who keep his commandments.

Sing to the Lord, bless his holy name.

Sing to the Lord all the earth.

Praise him with dancing and shout for joy.

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
