A Thought to Worship By:

     It is of no avail to talk of the church in general, the church in the abstract, unless the concrete particular local church which the people attend can become a center of light and leading, of inspiration and guidance, for its specific communityÉ

CHORAL FANFARE

*HYMN 363                                      A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

*INVOCATION AND LORDÕS PRAYER (unison)

Almighty God, gracious Lord, pour out your Spirit upon your faithful people. Reform us again and again until we become instruments of your love and peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to prayÉ

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

Give Ear, O Ye Heavens

Deuteronomy 32: 1-4

Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak;

And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

My doctrine shall drop as the rain,

My speech shall distill as the dew,

As the small rain upon the tender herb,

And as the showers upon the grass:

Because I will publish the Name of the Lord:

Ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

He is the Rock, His work is perfect:

For all His ways are judgment:

A god of truth and without iniquity,

Just and right is He.

Built on a Rock

Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig, 1783-1872

Built on a rock the Church shall stand,

Even when steeples are falling;

Crumbled have spires in every land,

Bells still are chiming and calling.

Calling the young and old to rest,

Calling the souls of those distressed,

Longing for life everlasting.

Not in our temples made with hands

God the Almighty, is dwelling;

High in the heavens His temple stands,

All earthly temples excelling.

Yet He who dwells in heaven above

Deigns to abide with us in love,

Making our bodies His temple.

We are God's house of living stones,

Built for His own habitation;

He fills our hearts, His humble thrones,

Granting us life and salvation.

Were two or three to seek His face,

He in their midst would show His grace,

Blessing upon them bestowing.

Through all the passing years, O Lord,

Grant that, when church bells are ringing,

Many may come to hear God's Word

Where He this promise is bringing;

I know My own, My own know Me;

You, not the world, My face shall see;

My peace I leave with you. Amen

Jesus, Name of Wondrous Love

William W. How

Jesus, Name of wondrous love,

Name all other names above!

Unto which must every knee

Bow in deep humility.

Jesus, Name of priceless worth

To the fallen sons of earth,

For the promise that it gave,

"Jesus shall his people save."

Jesus, Name of wondrous love!

Human Name of God above;

Pleading only this we flee

Helpless, O our God, to thee.

Jesus, Name of wondrous love.

Peace Unto You

John Parker

Peace unto you when your feet are weary,

peace unto you when your path grows dim;

Peace unto you when you don't see clearly,

peace unto you when you find you can't find Him.

peace unto you when your heart is breaking,

peace unto you when your spirit cries;

Peace unto you when your soul is aching,

peace unto you when your hope, your last hope dies.

Peace unto you when in pray'r you're pleading,

peace unto you when you cease to roam;

Peace unto you when in fin'lly seeking peace,

you find that you're fin'lly home.
