These were merciful people; whose righteousness hath not been forgotten.

Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth forevermore.

The people shall tell of their wisdom; and the congregation will show forth their praise.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Liturgist:  Long ago, the people gathered in one place together.

People:  The room filled with the sound of rushing wind.

All:        Tongues of fire danced on their heads, and from their lips came words they did not know.

Liturgist:  It was the Holy Spirit who came upon them, whose message was GodŐs deeds of power.

People:  They were amazed. They were perplexed.

All:        But they were also the church of Jesus Christ and so are we. We gather and we pray: Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

CHORAL FANFARE

*HYMN 228               Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

*INVOCATION AND LORDŐS PRAYER (unison)

God our creator, earth has many languages, but your gospel proclaims your love to all nations in one heavenly tongue. Make us messengers of the good news that, through the power of your Spirit, all the world may unite in one song of praise; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever and taught us the language of prayer sayingÉ

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,  and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

PRAYERS FOR THE NATION ON MEMORIAL DAY SUNDAY

Invitation to Prayer and Silent Meditation

A Prayer of Thanksgiving (unison)

Almighty God, Father of humanity, we thank you for the heritage and privilege of our beloved country, and for the wisdom with which you have led it from its perilous beginnings, through all the difficulties and dangers to this day of grace; reverently we take it to our hearts as we lift our prayer to you, beseeching you with passionate tenderness that your people may be delivered from every evil, turned from every error, and kept in the highway of a divine vocation; that your will may be done in fraternal righteousness, and your purpose fulfilled in the amplitude, power and prophecy of a nation called to you for a vast and holy errand in your world. As we come to you with thankful hearts, forgive us where we have failed to serve or to live out the freedom to which we have been called, and with which we have been blessed. We ask you to hear us, good Lord. Amen.

We ask you in ChristŐs name. Amen.

Blessed Is The Nation

Psalm 33:12-15, 20-21

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people of His inheritance.

Blessed are the nations who turn to the Lord, and place their trust in Him.

Oh God, who reigns on high, Keep watch o'er all the earth,

Creator of each heart, Your gracious love impart.

Our hope is in the Lord, the Lord,  He is our help and shield.

In Him our hearts rejoice,  In humble trust we yield.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people of His inheritance.

Blessed are the nations who turn to the Lord, and place their trust in Him.

From Sea To Shining Sea

Katherine Lee Bates

O beautiful for spacious skies,  For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties  Above the fruited plain.

America! America!  God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood  From Sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for pilgrim feet  Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat  Across the wilderness,

America! America!  God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,  Thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for patriot dream  That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam  Undimmed by human tears.

America! America!  God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood  From sea to shining sea!
